What moms know is that if you don’t have a plan then things don’t usually happen. Science is one of those things that doesn’t get a lot of play at our house. I’m not one to know what to do either. That’s where Spangler Science Club comes in. The monthly subscription box has everything you need to know and all of the supplies to do science experiments with your kids.
What
is Spangler Science Club?
Steve Spangler Science Club is a monthly subscription box. It was founded by Steve Spangler – Ellen DeGeneres’ go-to science guy. He has a YouTube channel and has been featured on TV (2016 was the last time they were on live television). Steve Spangler teaches sciences, designes toys, speaks, is an author and an Emmy award-winning television personality. Spangler is probably best known for his Mentos and Diet Coke geyser experiment that went viral. The Steve Spangler Science club lets kids and their parents feel the wonder and experience of science with experiments you can do at home each week.
How does it Work?
Every month you get a kit that comes to your door that is filled with science experiments. Each project is STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
What Comes In a Monthly Subscription Box?
The box has everything that you needed to do 4 science experiments. It was filled with the equipment you need, all the supplies, and instructions written on attractive laminated cards. As an example, one card had the supplies you need on one side and the 5-step instructions on the other side. The cards are waterproof so if you do spill it’s not going to ruin them right away. They’re good quality and are something that you can use again and again.
As far as level, these projects are more basic for the beginner-level science kid. If you’re really advanced or do a lot of science on your own you might want something more challenging. However, if you want a fun way to introduce kids to science or have ready-made projects so you can spend time and learn together, you’ll love Spangler Science Club. It’s really a great gift for grandparents, aunts/uncles to give to their family as a Christmas or birthday gift. They’ll remember you each time they get a box in the mail! It makes it like Christmas every month!
What Ages is a Spangler Science Kit Good For?
They say in their description that it’s good for 5 to 12-year-olds. Diana’s children, ages 5 and 8 both enjoy the experiments. It kept our kids entertained for about an hour. The projects are not terribly in-depth but they are geared toward the elementary school level. If your kid is a science whiz then Steve Spangler Science Club might be too basic. However, it’s great for younger kids. To us, the point is spending time together while learning in a fun way. They will need your help but the good news is, once they go through it once, they can do the projects again and again.
You will need to help your kids and participate but once they set everything up they can continue on their own. Even Diana’s 8-year-old needed input from us and we did most of it together. We did a square bubbles experiment and all the kids loved putting together the tinker-toy-like square but needed help measuring and getting the water, along with understanding the instructions.
Spangler Science Club Review
We really like Spangler Science Kits because you as a parent don’t have to be a science whiz to get your kids excited about science. Having everything you need makes it easy to actually do science experiments on a regular basis. Not only that, there are more than enough supplies to do the experiments several times. In fact, with the bubble one, we easily have enough supplies to do the experiment another 4 or more times! Repetition helps kids learn and they discover new things as they work through each activity.
“One of the best things about this club versus other clubs is that there are several activities (experiments) and enough materials to repeat the activities…”
– Robyn Webber
We think the younger you can get kids engaged and interested in science, the more natural it will be to them. It makes a huge difference in their learning to be introduced to these concepts as early as possible while they’re in the most rapid learning phase of their lives. The price is very affordable considering it would be very tough to find all the things you need, in the right quantity, somewhere else.
PROS:
When you have everything ready to go there’s a better chance you’ll actually do the experiments. “I’m a do-it-yourself kind of a person. I always feel like I can get a price, and get a better deal if I just go and look it up online, and do it myself, but the truth is when it comes right down to it trying to find different things like water gel powder,” explains Diana. “It takes time, and you can’t always find just the right amount. You have to buy a big bulk amount, and you end up buying more than you need.”
I found that honestly it just saves me time and money just to have the kits done. The truth is, before I started getting these I told myself I was going to do them, I had a ton of Pinterest on STEM experiments that was going to do with my kids, and it just didn’t happen. Now it happens, because it is so easy, and I really love that about it.
CONS:
You have a commitment so if you’re unsure, start with the 1 month subscription. It will auto-renew until you cancel. Luckily you can do this online, 24/7.
Here is our video showing us opening and doing an experiment:
Steve Spangler Science Kit of the Month Cost:
You have 3 options to choose from: STEM Lab Deluxe, STEM Lab, and STEM Snack. You can sign up for 1 month, 3 months, or 12 months.
✔ STEM Snack is $9.99 a month, but you have to pay $5 for shipping and handling, and it only comes with 1-2 science experiments. Ideal for 1-4 children or if you would get overwhelmed with one per week. Ideal for 1-2 kids.
✔ STEM Lab is $20 a month and it comes with 3-4 science experiments (ideal since you’re already paying $5 shipping). Ideal for 1-3 kids. BEST CHOICE for most.
✔ STEM Lab Deluxe is $29.99, and it’s also free shipping, and it comes with 10-12 experiments. Ideal for a larger family or group of up to 4 children (like you have neighbor kids over or for a group). This level has more support materials for parents to extend the experiments and go more in-depth.
With a subscription, you also get 20% off at the Steve Spangler store which has some really fun products we haven’t seen anywhere else.
Questions
Will the experiments be repeated?
No, not within the same subscription. However, if you switch to another subscription there may be some duplication.
Can I switch boxes if I decide I want more or fewer experiments?
Yes, you can request a change by just emailing Spangler Science Club.
What is the cancellation policy?
For STEM Snack and STEM Lab Deluxe, you will need to cancel by 3 pm (MST) on the 14th of your rebilling period. If you purchased the 3 month kit, for example, you will need to cancel by this deadline after your 3rd kit has shipped.
For STEM Lab, you will need to cancel before 4 pm (MST) on the 20th of your renewal period. If you purchased the 3-month kit, for example, you will need to cancel by this deadline after your 3rd kit is shipped.
What if I want to give Spangler Science as a gift without auto-renewal?
There is a gift option that only sends the number of boxes you specify and will not auto-renew. This is great for grandparents or birthday gifts. Just select the “This is a gift” button to get started. You can also send a message with the gift and there’s even an option to auto-renew if you want to be sure your recipient gets boxes on an ongoing basis.
How do I cancel and can I cancel online?
It’s very important to us that it’s easy to cancel should you want to. You can cancel at any time either by email or through the Spangler Science website. Just be aware that if you cancel your subscription it does not cancel your current subscription. It just cancels auto-renewals. You can’t cancel and get a refund if you are in the middle of a subscription. For example, if you sign up for 12 months will receive 12 kits. So you may want to sign up for 3 months and then decide whether to renew. Before you get the 3rd box is the ideal time to cancel so you don’t renew for another 3 months. You cannot cancel midway through and get a refund.
